Audi E-Tron, sports car of the future

1 - audi_1 ...
At the recent Frankfurt Motor Show you could catch a glimpse of what the future holds for the sports car that will pass you on the motorway with a silent swoosh of electric-driven power rather than with the throaty roar we know from a Lamborghini or a Ferrari.
Arguably the centre of attraction at the Frankfurt Show was the all-red Audi E-Tron concept based on the R8 sports car. The design and performance figures leave no doubt that it belongs to the top sports car league.
The lithium-ion battery unit, that provides a range of 248 kilometres, is positioned directly behind the passenger cabin for an optimal centre of gravity and axle load distribution. Four motors -- two each at the front and rear axles -- drive the wheels, producing a total of 230 kW/313 hp. The two-seater accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and from 60 to 120 km/h in 4.1 seconds.
The performance figures are by no means the only evidence of the consistent and holistic strategy. The design makes it clear that the e-tron belongs in the major leagues of sports cars, and the package takes into account the specific realities of an electric vehicle. The battery is directly behind the passenger cabin for an optimal center of gravity and axle load distribution.
There is still a lot of work to do before electric cars are ready for volume production, however. The greatest challenge is the integration of the energy storage system. Acceptable range and performance requires a traction battery that is heavy and takes up a lot of space. Audi is taking a new approach to offset these disadvantages - a holistic approach with a specific vehicle package, a systematic lightweight construction concept and an optimal configuration of all components for the electric drive.

World's Cheapest Car Nano to be launched

tata Tata Motors will launch the much-awaited Nano, slated to be the world's cheapest car at less than $2,000, on Monday, but it may be the middle of the year before it is seen on Indian roads.
The formal launch comes 15 months after the tiny, snub-nosed car debuted at a glittering world autoshow in Delhi, and is seen as an effort by the leading Indian vehicle maker to meet a deadline it had set to launch in the first quarter of 2009.
Bookings will only be taken from the second week of April, with delivery some time after that.
"It would take at least until July for the cars to be actually on the roads," a sales manager at Mumbai dealership Fortune Cars said.
Where to book your Nano
The car was initially set to go on sale last October, but the main production plant had to be moved to Gujarat on the west coast following land protests in the eastern state of West Bengal.
Nano fever grips Bollywood
Only about 50,000 cars will be available in the first year, analysts say, until the 250,000-unit capacity in Gujarat comes on stream.
"We get a lot of enquiries, all wanting to know about the price, the variants available," said an official at Wasan Motors, another dealer.

Tata Motors has provided little details about the Nano to the dealers, but analysts say the cash-strapped company is likely to ask for a deposit of Rs 70,000 on booking.
"There has been a lot of hype created around the car," the manager at Fortune Cars said. "Some are genuine customers, others are just curious."

launch of the Nano at the New Delhi motor show

The Tata Nano might be the world's cheapest car but there was nothing cut-price about its launch.
After weeks of anticipation and a morning of wall-to-wall build-up on local television networks, which covered the event live, India's "people's car" rolled on stage to the epic strains of Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra, with Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Motors, at the wheel.
You could almost hear the cheer going up across India - and you couldn't hear yourself think in the auditorium - as waiting journalists, members of the public and the minister of commerce, Kamal Nath, broke into spontaneous and euphoric applause.
Tata (below), suave and 70, appeared to have a lump in his throat as he announced the realisation of a dream that has taken more than four years and 500 engineers to bring to reality.
This was more than just the launch of a car, he said: it was the jumping-off point for an ideal that its designers hope will revolutionise the lives of millions of Indians, most of whom live in rural areas many miles from the nearest bus stop.
A hologram of an Indian family four-up on a motorbike - a familiar sight in the country - reminded the audience that while the Nano might not have airbags and European safety certificates, it's a good deal safer than a two-wheeler.
Mr Tata spoke with feeling: "I observed families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby. It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family.
"Today, we indeed have a people's car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements, to be fuel-efficient and low on emissions." Tata's security men pleaded in vain for people not to scratch the car as enthusiasm swept away the choreographed launch ceremony and more than 1,000 delegates and journalists fought for a glimpse of the new machine.
And for Indians in the audience, the launch of Tata's wonder-car was an emphatic, jubilant statement to the world of what India is capable of delivering.

A new view of IndiaVIEWSONIC is becoming serious about the India market and launched a wide range of its products here last week.
While ViewSonic LCDs and projectors were available till now through resellers, the company now plans to open exclusive outlets for its products like the ViewBook, All-In-One PC, Mini PC and mediaplayers.
The ViewBook, which looks strikingly like the MacBook, could be a winner with its Aluminum-Magnesium alloy enclosure, extendable battery life and other high performance features.
Hope the company gets its pricing, yet unannounced, right. Another thing that caught our eye was the VPD 500 Mediaplayer with the 5" screen, 8 GB memory and HD output. The player, ideal for movie buffs, also supports ebooks.
Zino attacks the Mini spaceHAS the Mac Mini met its miniature match? Well, the Dell Zino, or the Inspiron Zino HD, comes in a box a bit bigger than the Mini, and adds some cosmetic flavor to the category with a selection of ten replaceable, colorful lids.
The "nettop" will arrive in a few configurations, starting at about $230 running Windows Vista operating system. The processors in all models will be supplied by AMD—not your everyday Intel Atom—and will be able to accommodate an optical multi-drive as well as a Blu-ray disc player.
The higher-priced model (at $650, including a 20-inch monitor) also gets an HDMI output, a 500-GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Home Premium.
The Apple Mini, meanwhile, soldiers on the desktop, starting at $600 and recently updated with slightly faster processors and more memory.

Harmfull Effects Of Coffee

Harmful effects of coffeeWe all know that there's really nothing to beat that curiously intoxicating smell of freshly ground coffee beans as well as that addictive first cup to jump-start your day. But it's not just the morning a steaming cup always comes in handy while driving negotiations, initiating great conversations or even kicking back next to a log fire.
It even gets a nod from researchers like Thomas H. Lee, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston. Attributing the benefits to large, long-term studies, Lee says that "long-running research shows that drinking coffee cuts the risk of dying early from a heart attack or stroke, and the bean improves productivity, too."
Now, before you make a manic sprint to the nearest store for a cappuccino machine, you may want to listen to what Upasna Kamineni, Vice Chairman, Apollo Charities, and an active campaigner for health issues, has to say. "Coffee is both a health and a social hazard, and the cons far outweigh the pros," she says. Kamineni, also the Director of Lifetime Wellness RX, an Apollo Group body that conducts health talks, assessments and camps and also undertakes research-based projects on lifestyle disorders, thinks that it's best one stays away from the brew altogether.
"The excessive caffeine in coffee can boost your blood pressure and can leave you dehydrated. Add milk and sugar, and it becomes a recipe for disaster, that is bound to add extra pounds, she adds. Aerated drinks and canned fruit juices also get a thumbs down from her." Aerated drinks and canned fruit juices have a high concentration of sugar and should be avoided in the mornings. Try jasmine and green tea or even lemon water as the three are rich in antioxidants. Kamineni recommends switching over to juices and lemon soda by afternoon.
"Buttermilk is easy on your digestive system, too, and goes well with most Indian foods," she says. And for those of you who just can't kick the coffee habit, she suggests skipping milk. Taken black, both coffee and tea are calorie-free and full of antioxidants. Not a bad option for the coffee-crazy but health-conscious folks out there.

Walking while talking on cell phone risky for older people: Study

Don't walk when you talk while talking on mobile phones may be dangerous for older people, say researchers.
They also say that just listening to music on an iPod or other portable device doesn't pack the same risks as talking on a cell phone.
The findings are based on two lab-based studies in which participants had to manoeuvre on a treadmill to cross a virtual street.
"Many people assume that walking is so automatic that really nothing will get in the way," Live Science quoted Art Kramer, a psychology professor at the University of Illinois who conducted the research, as saying in a statement.
"But actually walking in environments that have lots of obstacles is perhaps not as automatic as one might think," Kramer added.
Participants in the study took their virtual stroll on a manual treadmill that only moves when the person walks.
The first study, with 36 college students, showed that students trying to hold a phone conversation took 25 percent longer to cross the street compared with those without phones and those listening to iPods.
Cell-phone users were also less likely to finish crossing the street in the 30 seconds allotted for the task.
However, the young adults were not more likely to get hit by a virtual car even if they were talking on a cell phone. The study was published online Nov. 5 in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention.
The second study, yet to be published, focused on people 60 and older.
"Older adults on the phone got run over about 15 percent more often [than those not on the phone]," Kramer said.
Subjects who had a history of falling fared even worse.
"Walking and talking on the phone while old, especially, appears to be dangerous," Kramer said

World's biggest cruise ship is a floating resort

Oasis of the Seas, the world's largest and newest cruise ship, is shown during a...

Royal Caribbean's new Oasis of the Seas is the largest, widest, tallest, most expensive cruise ship afloat, a cornucopia of amusements aimed at quashing the notion that cruising is a sedentary vacation, said chief executive Richard Fain.
Then he donned swim trunks, jumped on a boogie board and challenged fellow executives to a contest in one of the Oasis' two FlowRider pools that simulate surfing.
"I've never been a believer in building it big just for size's sake. We build large because we've had so many ideas they simply don't fit in a smaller hull," Fain said.
The $1.4 billion Oasis of the Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship, enters service during the industry's worst year in decades but is so exuberantly excessive that Fain predicts it will be profitable from day one.
Oasis is a floating resort that eclipses the condo towers it sails past at its new home, Port Everglades in southeast Florida. The 225,282-gross-ton ship has 16 passenger decks and can carry 6,292 passengers plus 2,165 crew.
It has rock-climbing walls, a basketball court, an ice skating rink, a carousel with hand-carved wooden animals, a shopping promenade lined with cafes and bars, cantilevered whirlpools overlooking the sea and a Central Park with 12,000 live plants and trees.

ZIP LINE
An amphitheater surrounds a deep-diving pool on the stern, where high-divers and synchronized swimmers perform. Passengers can harness themselves onto the "zip line" and soar across the ship above an open-air atrium nine decks high and lined with balconied cabins.
One of its many bars, the Rising Tide, floats up and down between three decks, while a touring company performs the Broadway musical "Hairspray" in the 1,380-seat theater.
The Oasis, which starts its inaugural voyage on Dec. 5, was six years in the making and arrives at a time when cruise lines are cutting rates to fill berths.
Net yields, a measure of revenue generated per bed per day, were down 16 percent during the first nine months of 2009 for the major companies, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, said Rod McLeod, a vacation management consultant who has held senior management posts at all three lines.
"Over the last 20 years, that's the steepest level of year-over-year declines in yields, which is understandable given what's happened in the worldwide economy," said McLeod, now with McLeod/Applebaum Partners in Miami.
The cruise lines are cautiously predicting 2010 will be less awful, with yields down by only 7 or 8 percent.
Generally the farther ahead passengers book cruises, the more the lines can charge. The window has begun to widen, with passengers now booking an average of three months ahead, compared with just six weeks in early 2009, McLeod said.

WAVE OF NEW SHIPS
But a wave of new ships ordered during the boom times are now coming on line and that will put pressure on rates, a boon for bargain-hunting passengers but not so much for cruise line earnings.
No. 1 cruise line Carnival's newest and biggest ship, the 3,652-passenger Carnival Dream, starts regular cruises to the Caribbean in December out of Florida's Port Canaveral.
Royal Caribbean will launch the Oasis' twin, Allure of the Seas, next December, one of eight new ships due out in 2010 industrywide. Capacity is expected to rise by 7 percent next year, and a little less than that in 2011, before settling.
"No new ships have been ordered for now 20 months and that hasn't occurred in the last 25 years," McLeod said.
New ships tend to attract passengers at the expense of the older ones. Cruise lines are compensating by moving their older ships away from weakening markets like Hawaii and Alaska and into growing ones like Europe and China, "like a giant chess game, playing with boats," he said.
Bookings aboard Oasis have been strong because it offers so much of everything, Royal Caribbean's Fain said.
Seven-night cruises start at $1,049 per person, double occupancy, for an inside cabin and run up to $16,659 per person for the two-story Royal Loft suite, which includes a baby grand piano and private 843-square foot balcony.
"We're getting much higher rates than I certainly would have expected even a year ago. The reception has just been overwhelming. I'm feeling pretty good right now," Fain said.

ZAMBONI DRIVER NEEDED
Royal Caribbean will see some cost savings from economies of scale on Oasis. Fuel consumption per guest is 30 percent lower than on an average ship and engine room staffing, for example, is not significantly bigger than on other ships because that part of the Oasis is very compact, Fain said.
Other costs are higher because it takes more staff to run its 24 dining venues and service 4,100 toilets, 42 elevators and 4,500 air conditioning units.
"On another ship we don't have high divers and horticulturists, Zamboni operators," Fain said, referring to equipment used to groom ice-skating rinks.
Oasis' size limits its itinerary. It will stop initially at the Caribbean ports of St. Maarten and St. Thomas and the Bahamian capital of Nassau, a week-long voyage that will later alternate with western Caribbean sailings.
Those ports dredged and deepened their approaches and built new docks to accommodate Oasis, while Port Everglades built a whole new terminal to handle the crowd of passengers who will leave the ship as a new horde embarks.
The mega-ship has its detractors. Travel writer Arthur Frommer wrote in his Budget Travel column that it exists to "cater to more of those people who are unable to entertain themselves, those arrested personalities who rely on constant, massive, outside distractions to ward off depression."

AN EVEN BIGGER ONE?
Other lines are cheering the Oasis, figuring the publicity bonanza will lift all cruise ships. Boutique lines are pitching their smaller more intimate vessels as the anti-Oasis.
"Yes they have the most space but they're also putting the most number of guests into that space," said Steve Tucker, vice president of North American field sales for privately held luxury line Silversea, which launches its all-suite Silver Spirit on a 91-day voyage from Port Everglades in December.
At a tenth the size of the Oasis, Silver Spirit offers a private butler in every stateroom and carries 540 passengers.
Fain, meanwhile, is "looking at the forward bookings and smiling" while fending off the inevitable question of whether Royal Caribbean will build a ship even bigger than Oasis.
"I'm not saying it couldn't happen but one would need a reason," he said. "If somebody comes up with an idea that we think would be appealing to our guests, we would certainly look at it."

Defragmenter

Disk Fragmenter, a built-in tool with almost every version of Windows, can pre-arrange all the “fragmented” pieces of a file close together to help reduce the time it takes to open files or load programs on your computer. Usually, the built-in disk defragmenter will defragment the entire hard-drive at once and tend to ignore files that are smaller than 64 MB. But, now,  Microsoft offers another free utility Contig (short for contiguous) that lets you have better control over the defragmentation process.  Contig, at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897428.aspx, lets you defragment individual files, folders, or the entire hard drive. You can run Contig from the command prompt, or try Power defragmenter, at http://my.opera.com/rejzor/blog/power-defragmenter-3-0-released, an easy and more visual interface for Contig. Power Defragmenter which internally uses Contig to perform the defragmentation process. You can also run Contig, online, at http://live.sysinternals.com/Contig.exe. Unlike others Contig uses Windows’internal defragmentation APIs, hence, won’t cause disk corruption, even if the programme is terminated suddenly. Please note you’ll need to run the utility as an administrator as it will throw an “Access denied” error. Defragmentation is recommended for traditional hard drives only.

It is a tiny utility that scans the dumps of BSOD, analyses the data and provides useful information to understand the crash. XSearch

XSearch can search files on your computer quite quickly. To search you just use the word options, like, “any of the words”, “all of the words”, “exact phrase”, “without the words” and others. To search by words separate the words by using the space character, to separate names and folders use the “;” character. For example: Words: “StringA String B”, Names: “*.a;*.b;kk*.*”, Folders: “C:Test;D:MyFolder”. You can enable the context menu for XSearch, to help search for files in any folder by right-clicking at the folder in Windows Explorer and choosing the “XSearch” menu item.

XSearch also supports search words in files in unicode or UTF8 formats. You can carry out search in hexadecimal, and provides a tool to view the contents. XSearch supports search for files in specified size, date and time - search files that were created at noon on 1st Aug 2009, or by the exact size in bytes, KB, MB or GB. The search results can be saved. Search histories are recorded, however, you can also clear them too.

XSearch supports most of the file operations in Explorer such as Copy, Cut, Rename, Drag and drop etc. The freeware version of XSearch can be downloaded here.
