World won’t end in 2012

Seeking to put an end to the gloomy prediction from doomsday theorists that the world would come to an end exactly three years from Monday (December 21, 2012), a science organisation rebutted their theory on all counts, in the City on Monday.

Briefing newspersons here, Prof Soumitro Banerjee, National General Secretary of the Breakthrough Science Society and M N Sriram, Advisor of the society’s State branch, have asked people to do away with the confusion and fear in their minds due such predictions.

Banerjee said, “The 2012 myth is taking alarming proportions. Many students are losing their interest in studies, suicidal tendencies are increasing among the people notably, youngsters, and a fear psychosis has gripped the gullible public in our country where scientific consciousness is already low.” Movies exploiting the theme were making big money by exploiting the credulity of public, he added.

It is a myth that ‘The Mayan calendar,’ quoted by doomsday theorists, predicts that the earth will end three years from now, Banerjee said. The other predictions that a collision of a large asteroid with the earth, reversal of earth’s magnetic poles, heating up of the earth by a large solar flare causing tsunamis and earthquakes are all myths, he added.

The society plans to organise a public interaction programme in Bangalore on January 10 with eminent scientists taking part, said Sriram.

Mobile TV

Reliance Mobile TVIn India, Live TV on mobile phone is a thrilling vision where more than 230 million mobile phone connections and about 120 million TV sets are into use. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), the broadcasting regulator, has considered and approved the idea of accessing TV on mobiles. Taking into account that one amongst six people across the world has a mobile phone and watching TV is one of the most popular pastimes, the prospective for Mobile TV in India appears vast in time. It is expected that there would be 5 to 8 million Mobile TV users in the country by 2010.

Around the World…
Where South Korea became the vanguard in Mobile TV, Japan too didn’t leave the opportunity to arrange new services. Likewise, prospects are high for India, where people spend a lot of time traveling. Content and broadcast companies, mobile service providers, infrastructure and handset manufacturers and technology providers are expected to get new business opportunities with operation of Mobile TV in the nation. In simple terms, it’s for all those who are passionate about new technology and are comfortable with features like texting, streaming, podcasting etc.

All About Technology
Mobile TV stands for Live TV transmitted through digital broadcasting technologies, for example DVB-H (digital video broadcasting-handheld) and DMB (digital multimedia broadcasting). Seeing that broadcast network for Mobile TV is different from cellular networks, 3G is not a condition for Mobile TV. In India, Nokia has already launched DVB-H enabled devices - N92 and N77 for Rs 21,000 and Rs 22,500. The Delhi users can see eight channels of Doordarshan. The users in other cities have to wait a little until Nokia extends its support and Doordarshan expands its services.

Spectrum Allocation
Auction of spectrum for Mobile TV services has been recently recommended by TRAI. Every operator, having cellular mobile telephone service license or unified access service license, would not require any other license to offer mobile TV services on their own network. A new class of mobile TV operators has also been suggested by TRAI. However, the suggestions still need to be accepted by the Government.

Prospective Ventures
As early experiments appear to be promising, Star Mobile Entertainment has joined hands with Sony Ericsson to put forward pre-loaded PLUS application in handsets falling in Walkman and Cyber-shot range. For this service, users can access more than 200 videos for Rs 30 per month. Similarly, MTV - the music channel, has tied-up with Vodafone, to launch a series of animated music videos. Channels like NDTVCNBC and Cartoon Network have set connections with BSNL.

Reliance, which has become a trusted name, is charging Rs 3 per minute for Mobile TV service, quite expensive if it is compared with a 99paisa call. However, Idea Cellular is comparatively good with its basic streaming service comprising 20 channels for Rs 150 per month. Experiments with daily pricing are on rise, to encourage sampling and make people comfortable with the idea of Mobile TV, by some operators.

The Future
Once the market develops and 3G policies get placed, Companies like Samsung and Nokia are all set to launch mobile TV handsets in India. At the outset, metropolitans and urban towns would be the target market and gradually filtering to other semi-urban towns. Sketchily, after overcoming primary obstacles such as fixed 3G policy, spectrum allocation, cost of mobile TV enabled handsets, designing of right content for mobile TV and speed of video streaming, it is projected to be a huge success in India.

Tata Indicom Photon Launches the Photon TV

Photon TV, a mobile TV streaming service from Tata Indicom has been launched. The service is open to all prepaid customers using Tata Indicom Photon+ high-speed wireless broadband internet. With the launch of Photon TV, Tata Indicom has caught up with Reliance Communications, which is already offering mobile TV streaming for its wireless broadband customers.
tata-photon-tvIf you have a prepaid Tata Indicom Photon+ connection, you can download and install the TV application from the Photon TV section of the Tata Indicom website. The Photon TV application is free, but you will need to pay for the download charges. Once you install the Photon TV application, double-click and open it. You are ready to view live TV on your laptop or desktop.
Since video-downloading is a data-intensive process, Photon TV works well only in HSIA areas. HSIA stands for High-speed Internet Access, which is available in 33 cities serviced by Tata Indicom Photon+. If you have a Tata Photon+ broadband data card, but live in a place without HSIA coverage, you will not be able to enjoy live streaming, since in non-HSIA areas, data downloads will slow.

Photon TV charges

tata-photon
Photon TV charges are considerably higher than similar charges for television on DTH or cable network, but don’t forget that unlike them, you can Photon TV anytime anywhere, if you are travelling around with your laptop in HSIA areas.
You have three options for Photon TV channel subscription. To subscribe for a single channel, you need to pay a monthly subscription charge of Rs 4. My 10 package will get you 10 channels a month, for Rs 29. My Full Pack will get you the entire bouquet of 40 channels, and it will cost you Rs 75 in subscription. New users get to watch all channels for free (no subscription, but data charges apply) for one hour before selecting the package of their choice.
However, do not forget that over and above the Photon TV subscription charge, you also need to pay for the data downloads. A single minute of video on Photon TV will be about 1.5 MBs. If you go on a binge of TV viewing on Photon TV, keep an eye on your data usage balance. You can check for your data usage from the Tata Indicom Photon+ icon on your desktop.

Photon TV technology

Tata Indicom has tied up with Apalya Technologies for the launch of Photon TV. Apalya, in turn, has tied up with TV distributors for the content. Tata Indicom and Apalya said that Photon TV users are prohibited from downloading, recording or reproducing content on Photon TV. This is to ensure copyright protection for the digital content beamed across Photon TV.
Photon TV, just as Photon+, makes use of CDMA-based high-speed wireless internet for TV broadcast. The launch of Photon TV shows that 3G telecom operators in India will increasingly target heavy data consumers. Going ahead, we can expect mobile operators offering mobile TV on cellphones and other wireless data devices. In terms of wireless data applications, Photon TV is only the beginning.
The Photon TV application is 16 MBs in size. Once you install and open the application, you will be asked to select the package of your choice. You can either select from the Photon TV packages, or go for a few channels of your choice. Photon TV shows you the list of channels on offer. You can click and select whichever channel suits you. Ducati to drive into India's luxury bike market

taly’s Ducati is looking to ride the fledgling Indian superbike market with models costing more than a top-end car as it sees consumers returning in hordes to the luxury segment after the lull caused by the slowdown.

Ducati, which sells bikes for Rs 14-60 lakh, plans to sell over 150 bikes in India in 2010. The company hopes bike enthusiasts will overlook the cost factor and lap up its products. “The bike culture runs in the genes here,” says Ducati Asia-Pacific CEO Mirko Bordiga.

The company thinks India has bigger potential than China in this arena. At present, the Indian superbike segment sees annual sales of around 1,000. The Chinese market, by comparison , is limited to less than 100 units annually due to government restriction to sell smallerengine bikes.

Not surprisingly, India happens to be Ducati’s most attractive market in Asia. The company is looking to open four dealerships next year in addition to the existing two. It also plans to sell over 150 bikes in 2010 against the 35 units that were lapped up since its July launch.

Ducati eyes superbike market

Motorcycles in the high-powered engine capacity of 500-2 ,500-cc come under the superbike category and sell for Rs 10-60 lakh in India. Global manufacturers think India’s superbike market is poised for greater growth.

Better roads and a growing motor sports culture are helping the superbike market grow in India, says Yamaha’s national business head Pankaj Dubey.

Besides Yamaha, Ducati, Honda, Harley Davidson,

Suzuki, Triumph and Kawasaki have all had launches to their name in the domestic market in the past two years. India is estimated to sell 7 million twowheelers annually. Despite the high import duties at 113% that jack up prices, upcoming launches in the superbike segment are expected to add to that number. Yamaha, for instance, plans to launch more models in the 1,000-1 ,600-cc segment during the January Auto Expo in New Delhi.

The company debuted with the YZF-R 1 and the 1670cc torque monster MT-01 models in November 2007. Their success — 150 units have been sold — prompted Yamaha to launch its Rs 20 lakh-flagship VMax a few months ago.Suzuki Motorcycle India, meanwhile, will add new models in the over 1000-cc range, aiming to sell over 150 bikes in 2010. Its Rs 12.5-lakh Hayabusa, among the largest selling superbikes here, was launched last year.

“The superbike demand in India is consistently growing,” said Suzuki Motorcycle India marketing & sales vicepresident Atul Gupta.

Sadguru Shri Yogi Nareyana Ashrama

To the West of Kaiwara, amidst beautiful and verdant surroundings, is the famous ashrama of the saint-poet, social reformer and spiritual-giant, Shri Yogi Naraeyana Yatheendraru.  If not for anything else he will be fondly remembered all over the world for his wonderful and remarkable words of prophecy and for his unforgettable exhortation and advocacy of the Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – concept. (It might be of interest to note that this characteristic Hindu concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (universal citizenship and brotherhood) was spelt out by Adiguru Shri Shankaracharya (788-820 AD) in his classic composition Annapoorna stotram, the last phrase of the last verse- Swadeshobhunathrayam) This celebrated ashrama has been, for over a hundred and fifty years, a haven of peace, a shelter for the diseased, depressed and the down-trodden and a beacon of hope for the seekers of bliss and beatitude. New building of the ashram with its own characteristic architectural specialty and beauty boasts of sense and sublime atmosphere of an ancient rushyashrama.

As you cross the threshold of the main entrance and walk a few yards in the prangana (the court or quadrangle) you will behold the Samadhi Brindavana of the great Yatheendraru. There you see a well-made bust of the saint seated in Padmasana in the dhyana (meditative) posture. This metallic bust is made of Panchaloha (five metals). You will also see three Utsava moorthis (Procession idols) of the Yatheendra's Ishtadaiva (favorite or tutelary deity) of Amara Naraeyana. On the right in a separate shrine you see a life-size statue of the Yatheendraru on the left you see great Ashwattha Vriksha (the peepul tree) which was planted by Shri Yogi Naraeyana Yatheendraru himself ! Around the tree we have the stone sculptures representing the Navagraha and Ganapathi shrines, the sacred well that the Yatheendraru got dug and filled with water by his wonderful prayer. Within the precincts of the ashram we have shrines dedicated to Satyanarayana Swami, Vara Lakshmi, the eight dikpalakas, Samartha Ramadasa and others.

Thousands of tourists, visitors, pilgrims and devotees flock this ashrama complex every day. Regular ritualistic worship in all the shrines, thrice everyday, satsang, meetings and conferences, bhajans and keerthana –Singing are a regular daily feature. Besides these, other cultural programmes are also conducted. The Ashrama Trust has also arranged annadasoha (daily feeding), has constructed residential and guest quarters and has instituted the necessary administrative infrastructure. There are no class, caste or gender distinctions in the service offered by the Ashrama. Many social welfare projects are in operation besides the regular religious and spiritual functions. On the first day of the second fortnight (Bahula) of the last lunar month called Phalguna a grand car-festival takes place every year which is attended by thousands of bhaktas. On the third day of the first fortnight (Shuddha) of the third lunar month, Jyeshta the thureeya Samadhi Pravesha Parvotsava is conducted in a solemn manner. On the full-moon day of the fourth lunar month, Ashaadha, which is called Guru Poornima, the traditional Guru Pooja (worship of all the mentors) is conducted with devotion and dignity. On that day a music festival is also arranged. Another very important celebration conducted under the auspices of the Ashram is Mutthaide Bhagya Seva. (In traditional Hindu society a Mutthaide a married woman whose husband is alive is regarded as Goddess and Bhagya means good fortune. The Ashram honors and worships a number of Mutthaidaes whose very right and presence mean good fortune.)

These are some of the impressive details in respect of the Shri Yogi Naraeyana Ashrama Trust and you are requested to participate in any or all of the Kainkaryas of the Ashrama.

Full Story

Researchers from Intel Labs demonstrated an experimental, 48-core Intel processor, or "single-chip cloud computer," that rethinks many of the approaches used in today's designs for laptops, PCs and servers. This futuristic chip boasts about 10 to 20 times the processing engines inside today's most popular Intel® Core™-branded processors.
The long-term research goal is to add incredible scaling features to future computers that spur entirely new software applications and human-machine interfaces. The company plans to engage industry and academia next year by sharing 100 or more of these experimental chips for hands-on research in developing new software applications and programming models.
While Intel will integrate key features in a new line of Core-branded chips early next year and introduce six- and eight-core processors later in 2010, this prototype contains 48 fully programmable Intel processing cores, the most ever on a single silicon chip. It also includes a high-speed on-chip network for sharing information along with newly invented power management techniques that allow all 48 cores to operate extremely energy efficiently at as little as 25 watts, or at 125 watts when running at maximum performance (about as much as today's Intel processors and just two standard household light bulbs).
Intel plans to gain a better understanding of how to schedule and coordinate the many cores of this experimental chip for its future mainstream chips. For example, future laptops with processing capability of this magnitude could have "vision" in the same way a human can see objects and motion as it happens and with high accuracy.
Imagine, for example, someday interacting with a computer for a virtual dance lesson or on-line shopping that uses a future laptop's 3-D camera and display to show you a "mirror" of yourself wearing the clothes you are interested in. Twirl and turn and watch how the fabric drapes and how the color complements your skin tone.
This kind of interaction could eliminate the need of keyboards, remote controls or joysticks for gaming. Some researchers believe computers may even be able to read brain waves, so simply thinking about a command, such as dictating words, would happen without speaking.
Intel Labs has nicknamed this test chip a "single-chip cloud computer" because it resembles the organization of datacenters used to create a "cloud" of computing resources over the Internet, a notion of delivering such services as online banking, social networking and online stores to millions of users.
Cloud datacenters are comprised of tens to thousands of computers connected by a physically cabled network, distributing large tasks and massive datasets in parallel. Intel's new experimental research chip uses a similar approach, yet all the computers and networks are integrated on a single piece of Intel 45nm, high-k metal-gate silicon about the size of a postage stamp, dramatically reducing the amount of physical computers needed to create a cloud datacenter.
"With a chip like this, you could imagine a cloud datacenter of the future which will be an order of magnitude more energy efficient than what exists today, saving significant resources on space and power costs," said Justin Rattner, head of Intel Labs and Intel's Chief Technology Officer. "Over time, I expect these advanced concepts to find their way into mainstream devices, just as advanced automotive technology such as electronic engine control, air bags and anti-lock braking eventually found their way into all cars."
Cores Allow Software to Intelligently Direct Data for Efficiency
The concept chip features a high-speed network between cores to efficiently share information and data. This technique gives significant improvement in communication performance and energy efficiency over today's datacenter model, since data packets only have to move millimeters on chip instead of tens of meters to another computer system.

Application software can use this network to quickly pass information directly between cooperating cores in a matter of a few microseconds, reducing the need to access data in slower
off-chip system memory. Applications can also dynamically manage exactly which cores are to be used for a given task at a given time, matching the performance and energy needs to the demands of each.
Related tasks can be executed on nearby cores, even passing results directly from one to the next as in an assembly line to maximize overall performance. In addition, this software control is extended with the ability to manage voltage and clock speed. Cores can be turned on and off or change their performance levels, continuously adapting to use the minimum energy needed at a given moment.
Overcoming Software Challenges
Programming processors with multiple cores is a well-known challenge for the industry as computer and software makers move toward many-cores on a single silicon chip. The prototype allows popular and efficient parallel programming approaches used in cloud datacenter software to be applied on the chip. Researchers from Intel, HP and Yahoo's Open Cirrus collaboration have already begun porting cloud applications to this 48 IA core chip using Hadoop, a Java software framework supporting data-intensive, distributed applications as demonstrated by Rattner today.

Intel plans to build 100 or more experimental chips for use by dozens of industrial and academic research collaborators around the world with the goal of developing new software applications and programming models for future many-core processors.
"Microsoft is partnering with Intel to explore new hardware and software architectures supporting next-generation client plus cloud applications," said Dan Reed, Microsoft's corporate vice president of Extreme Computing. "Our early research with the single chip cloud computer prototype has already identified many opportunities in intelligent resource management, system software design, programming models and tools, and future application scenarios."
This milestone represents the latest achievement from Intel's Tera-scale Computing Research Program, aimed at breaking barriers to scaling future chips to 10s-100s of cores. It was co-created by Intel Labs at its Bangalore (India), Braunschweig (Germany) and Hillsboro, Ore. (U.S.) research centers. Details on the chip's architecture and circuits are scheduled to be published in a paper at the International Solid State Circuits Conference in February.
